Winter Cup Rolling Strong
We had a quick turn around leaving the rink at 2:00 A.M. this morning and opening the doors at 6:30 A.M. but it's been a great day of hockey here in the Motor City already! We kicked things off with a fast paced Midget game between "Team Fieldhouse" (They look a lot like a Bordercat team) and the Mississauga Mission Rattlers. Fieldhouse won the game 5-1 but the score doesn't even come close to explaining the game. Ryan Guzek of Team Fieldhouse came up with huge save after huge save in the first period that let his team maintain the lead, and a couple of late goals but things out of reach for the Rattlers.
A game of the day candidate this morning was the Bantam matchup between Mission Black Ice and Team Fieldhouse which ended with Black Ice on top 4-3 in a 7 man shootout. That game featured a couple of roller hockey legends behind the benches with Jason Muro heading up the Black Ice and Matt Koleski leading the Fieldhouse team.
Speaking of Jason, I can't tell you how hard I laugh every time we get a chance to hang out. Hands down the funniest guy in the sport today. I never get tired of rehashing all the old memories of tournaments past with him and just talking hockey in general. He is one of the guys that really "gets it", he does everything he can to get kids involved in the sport and is as loyal as they come. On behalf of TORHS2Hot4Ice I'd like to thank him for making the clown car trip to Detroit this weekend with 5 teams, it's greatly appreciated.
The atmosphere heated up quite a bit around 9:00 this morning when a roller hockey legend lit the lamp twice in 3 shifts for Team USA in the World Junior Gold Medal game. Even though the restaurant wasn't open (and Joe Cook didn't show up to hang out with us) the environment was great with bar stools and tables filled to watch the game. Congrats to Team USA on their 3-1 victory and on bringing the Gold back to the States.
The second Pro division games are off and rolling now and here is a quick look at the standings.
Tour Mudcats 2-0, LA PAMA Cyclones 2-0, Alkali RPD 1-0, Tour Bordercats 1-0, Alkali Impulse 1-1, LA PAMA Chupacabras 0-1, Tour Excitement 0-1, Mission Black Ice 0-1, RB Selects 0-1, and Infamous 0-2.
There should be some great games coming up throughout the day, and we will be back to get you updated on those as well as some off the rink action here at Joe Dumars' Fieldhouse.
